In July 2023, Morningstar Golf Club, in partnership with British Columbia Golf, will host the BC Amateur Championship, a premier golf event of excellence in British Columbia.  In addition to 2023, Morningstar Golf Club will also host the 2030 BC Amateur Championship.

The BC Amateur Championship features the finest amateur golfers in the province with an expected field of 156 players travelling to the area to compete over four days.  The top four players in the event will qualify for the Willingdon Cup – a provincial team competition at the 2023 Canadian Amateur Championship.  The last time Morningstar Golf Club hosted the BC Amateur Championship was in 2007 when Kevin Carrigan, from Victoria, set the course record of 61.

With the large field of players, their supporters, and event volunteers coming to the Parksville area during the second week of July, the tournament offers a great opportunity for local business support.

This exciting announcement highlights the re-emergence of Morningstar Golf Club as a preferred site for regional and provincial golf events.  Following a brief period in receivership, the golf club is now owned by Realcor Golf Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of the International Union of Operating Engineers Pension Fund.

Several prestigious tournaments, including the successful 2022 BC Junior Amateur Championship last year and this past weekend’s RBC PGA Scramble Regional Qualifier, have been held at the course with the 2023 BC Amateur Championship a very welcome addition to next year’s event line up.  The Les Furber designed course, created in 1991, has hosted the Qualifying School of the Canadian Tour; the Morningstar Classic, an event on the Canadian Tour; and a number of Golf Canada national championships.

The announcement of the July 2023 BC Amateur Championship was made at a media event hosted at Morningstar Golf Club on August 17th. Speaking at the announcement were Barrie McWha (Morningstar General Manager), Kris Jonasson (CEO British Columbia Golf), Lee Riggs (International Union of Operating Engineers), Ed Mayne (Mayor, City of Parksville), and Chris Beach (Morningstar Members Committee).
